Self Draft Contoured Flare Pants

Top: Zara

Pants: DIY

As you can see, I finally cut out my fashion fabric from the toile I created.  The fashion fabric is white stretch cotton twill I purchased from Jo-Ann’s.  They pretty much keep a stock of stretch cotton twill on hand all the time in a variety of colors online and in the store.   This stretch cotton twill fabric is very comfortable and forgiving (meaning tons of elasticity).

I thoroughly enjoyed the process of drafting these pants from my very own measurements.  Now I’m equipped with the pant foundation that I can make into shorts, trousers, pedal pushers…the sky’s the limit.  AND I can truly say, no retail patterns were harmed in the process.  My primary issues with using commercial patterns are crotch, hip, and length fittings.

My mom swears by using the “pattern fitting” method by Pants for Real People.  All of her pants she makes do come out perfect when she applies the fitting technique taught in Pants for Real People.  The book is a wonderful guide for all fitting issues under the sun with any commercial pattern.  My mom did help me with a few adjustments to my toile with the help of what she learned from this book and from years of experience being a seamstress.

I'm looking forward to making quite a few pants in different fabrics to transition into Fall.
